Compact flash memory cards were first introduced in 1994. Along with SD memory cards, they are the most commonly used. While compact flash memory cards are larger than SD cards, they have much greater data storage capabilities, usually up to 12 GB. Because of the increased data storage demands of digital cameras (people are shooting more pictures and in better qualities), Compact flash memory cards are likely to take over SD cards as the most widely used. Just like SD has an extended form (SDHC), compact flash has type 1 and type 2. If your digital camera takes type 2 compact flash memory cards, then it will also take type 1. However, the opposite is not true.

The type 2 compact flash memory cards are slightly thicker than the type 1 cards. They aren’t so widely used but can be found on some digital cameras which also take micro drives. Until recently, micro drives were preferable because they were most cost efficient per MB of storage. However, compact flash type 2 is now becoming more popular because it uses less energy, is more durable, and also is becoming much cheaper. Depending on the amount of data storage you need, you can find compact flash memory cards for 8-15 pounds. Just keep in mind that data storage isn’t everything when it comes to choosing memory cards. You will also want to make sure you are getting a quality card which has been made to last and has a high class (data transfer speed).
