Naked Lunch

Naked Lunch is a novel written not by flower delivery edinburgh but by William S. Burroughs published in 1959. The book has an innovative structure – a series of loosely connected vignettes which Burroughs stated were intended to be read in any order. Narrated by junkie William Lee, the reader follows him and his various aliases from the US to Mexico, and then Tangier before the dreamlike Interzone.

Each vignette is taken from Burroughs’ own experience in the places that the fictional Lee visits and from his own drug addictions (heroin, morphine and Eukodol – a German opiod). In Tangier Burroughs (and Lee) became addicted to “Majoun” – a strong strain of marijuana. Naked Lunch was listed in Time magazine’s “100 Best English-language Novels from 1923-2005.”

Naked Lunch’s extremely controversial subject matter and use of obscene language led to the book being banned in Boston and Los Angeles and by several European publishers. Indeed, it is of the most recent American books over which an obscenity trial was conducted.

Cascades d'Ouzoud

The Cascades d’Ouzoud is an impressive set of waterfalls located in the Moroccan Atlas mountain range. The exact situation of the waterfalls is the Grand Atlas village of Tanaghmeilt, 150km north-east of Marrakech, in a province called Azilal.

The waterfalls measure at 110m and one can get a dizzying feel for the height by standing at the precipice. The bottom of the waterfalls is also accessible and the walk down is very pleasant. ‘Ouzoud’, the Berber word for ‘olive’, refers to the olive trees surrounding the falls and the mercifully shady path to the base winds through them.

At the base of the Ouzoud waterfalls there are a multiplicity of small pools to swim in (remember to leave your r4 sdhc card on the riverbank) and a smattering of cafes offering mint tea whilst you dry (never too lengthy a process in Morocco). Do not fear however, the vicinity is refreshingly lacking in commercialisation. The best time to visit the waterfalls is between mid to late afternoon as the sun creates some spectacular rainbows. The widest rainbows can be locates towards the bottom of the Ouzoud falls.

Goodbye Summer

My god, is it autumn already? It's been miserable this week! I woke up to pouring rain this morning, and it's been pouring ever since, how depressing!

I bought loads of summer clothes earlier this year and I've not even worn everything, some of it is sat in my wardrobe brand new and unworn!

I should've spent more money on rain jackets and chunky knitwear to keep me warm, it looks like summer's dead and gone.

Though maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, sometimes summer comes back for a quick burst at the very end of August and September, but we've had horrible post apocalyptic rain showers broken up by sunny spells since the beginning of August so who knows really?!

Maybe I should think about going on holiday somewhere with winter sun to make up for the lack of summer we've had this year!

Internet Browsing

I love a good bit of internet shopping, but it's a slippery slope once I start!

I was just looking online for a replacement np-bn1 battery for my camera, but I started browsing around the web store to see what else they had on offer and now I have a basket full of stuff!

There are pretty good deals on extra batteries, memory cards and stuff, but I've started looking at lenses and now I feel like I need and rightfully deserve to buy myself a new lens!

I really want a fisheye lens, they are really cool and the effect is brilliant, but they're really expensive. You can get cheap knock-offs but they are just that - cheap! A decent quality fisheye lens costs a fair chunk of change, so I think I'm going to stop my internet spending there, for now...

Getting music on your Nintendo DS

I use my Nintendo DS for a lot of things since I got my R4i card, because it's given me a huge memory boost and I can now carry around music and movies with me.

It was a little difficult to figure out at first, but these are the easiest steps that I could find that helped me.

1. Connect the microSD card to your computer
2. Format the microSD card
3. Drag and drop the R4i card firmware onto the microSD card
4. Put the microSD card into the R4i and back into the DS
5. Load R4 and check that it all works
6. Reconnect the microSD to your computer
7. Locate the 'Music' folder on the card
8. Drag and drop any music you want to store in your DS
9. Put the microSD back into the R4i and into the Ds
10. Enjoy!
